The timeless hymn of ‘Great is Thy Faithfulness’ by Thomas Obediah Chisholm has been on my mind this week, particularly the chorus:
Great is Thy Faithfulness
Great is Thy Faithfulness
Morning by morning new mercies I see
And all I have needed Thy hand hath provided
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me
After a difficult few weeks as a family we have seen God keep promises that he has made and daily seen his mercy and grace. I have been thankful to God and ‘Great is Thy Faithfulness’ has been on my mind because the words express to God how I have been feeling.
We had to wait to see the promise from God fulfilled and trust he was faithful, this has not always been easy. I did however find comfort when reading the Bible that we were in good company, many people had long waiting periods. For example, Abraham was told that he would have a son (Genesis 15:4-5) and that this would be through his old barren wife (Genesis 17:15-16) but it was more than 20 years later that she had a baby.
When waiting for a promise to be fulfilled Psalm 27:14 encourages us to: ‘wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart…’ We daily have to decide to trust that God can use every situation for good (Romans 8:28), that he loves and cares deeply for us (Zephaniah 3:17) and that he knows what we need and will provide (Matthew 6:8).
Therefore my challenge to you today is to think about how you have seen God’s faithfulness in your life and to turn to him and thank him for it. Remind him of the promises he has made to you and tell him that you trust him with them.
Notes:
- I often find that songs help me express to God how I am feeling, last week I needed to be reminded of the power of praise and wrote a post entitled: ‘Raise a Hallelujah, Heaven Comes to Fight for Me’ which is available here.
- I wrote more on provision in the post: ‘Our Daily Bread: God’s Provision’ which is available here.
- Great is they faithfulness lyrics are available here and a video version here.
