I have had an anthem this week which I keep coming back to; it has helped me to communicate with God through some tough things and has really lifted me. It’s a song called ‘Raise a Hallelujah’ by Bethel Music and it is all about the power of praise when things are difficult. Here is an extract from it:
I raise a hallelujah, in the presence of my enemies
I raise a hallelujah, louder than the unbelief
I raise a hallelujah, my weapon is a melody
I raise a hallelujah, heaven comes to fight for me
I’m gonna sing, in the middle of the storm
Louder and louder, you’re gonna hear my praises roar
Up from the ashes, hope will arise
Death is defeated, the King is alive!
The song is saturated in truth, Ephesians 6:10-20 explains how the Christian life is a battle but that we are equipped with the Armour of God. One of the weapons is the ‘…shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one’ (Ephesians 6:16). One way to raise the shield of faith is to sing songs of praise as they remind us that God is all powerful (e.g., Jeremiah 32:17) and that nothing is impossible for him (Luke 1:37 ESV).
In fact the song was written out of a place where the worship leader felt like he was facing a giant of unbelief and he needed to remind himself of who God is. The circumstance was that a little boy in his church was dying; the church gathered to pray and worship; this song came out of that session and God performed a miracle healing the boy.
So I challenge you to engage with God through a worship song today and to raise your shield of faith.
